Standards For Hazardous Locations
Ordinary flashlights can potentially cause a fire or explosion when
used in an area where the air contains small amounts of flammable
gasses like methane or particles such as grain dust or powered
aluminum. Lights rated for use in these "Hazardous Locations" should be
used. A considerable amount of effort has been expended to define
exactly what these locations are and how electrical equipment should be
built and tested for use in Hazardous Locations. In the US the defining
document is the National Electric Code (NFPA 70). Testing Laboratories
such as UL, FM and CSA (Canada) have created standards and tests
specifically for the use of flashlights used in the Hazardous Locations
laid out in the NEC. Although no specific standard exists in the
European Union (EU) for flashlights ratings are applied relative to
general standards for use of electrical equipment in Hazardous
Locations.
When choosing a flashlight it is extremely important that the
rating applied to the flashlight be understood and the light not be
used in areas which exceed the rating of the flashlight. The ratings
reveal the type of gas mixture allowed, the temperature of the hottest
element in the light and list the specific brand and model number of
battery permitted.
