Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

For over a quarter century Underwater Kinetics, better known as UK, has been in the business of designing and manufacturing lights, containers and accessories for use in harsh or difficult environments. Our waterproof lights are the standard for scuba divers, fire fighters, utility workers and health and safety personnel. UK protective dry cases meet rigid standards set by OEMs to protect their products in challenging environments.

We are looking for the talented design engineer to help maintain our current markets and help us expand into other markets. The successful candidate will be a hands-on product designer. This position will report to the VP, Engineering.

Duties:

• Hands-on design of new products to meet features, performance and cost goals.
• Create product proposals, budgets and schedules.
• Create timelines and budgets for new production developments.
• Actively pursue improves to the current product line.
• Must have proven experience in designing parts and assemblies in: injection molded plastic , stamped parts, die casting, wire forms, plating, electrical packaging, and optics.
• Be a good team member to other mechanical, industrial design, electrical and optics engineers in the upgrading of existing project and new products. As well as managing outside consults.
• Investigate/implement new materials and techniques to our product line.
• Actively participate in weekly engineering/design meeting.
• Be a mentor to the engineering and manufacturing groups, i.e., "player-coach".
• Occasional travel to vendors, to trade shows, and for sourcing approvals.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of BS in Mechanical Engineering (or Electro-Mechanical, Optical-Mechanical)
• Minimum 7 years in product development/R&D/manufacturing.
• Proficient in SolidWorks (and Pro-E a plus)
• Can perform and direct FEA analysis (mechanical & thermal) using COSMOS.
• Must have hands-on experience with electro-mechanical products.
• Must be a team player.
• Formal Lean principle and 6 sigma training, a plus.
• Must be able to multi-task.
• Have done business in Mexico and China. Off shore, tooling builds and outsourcing.
• Must be an excellent communicator with engineering, manufacturing, and sales groups.
• Must be a proven, excellent project manager.
